GANGSTA GRANNY BY DAVID WALLIAMS
HARPER COLLINS CHILDREN’S BOOKS (KOBO), 2011
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma’s house. She’s the boringest grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. But there are two things Ben doesn’t know about his grandma.
1) She was once an international jewel thief.
2) All her life, she has been plotting to steal the Crown Jewels, and now she needs Ben’s help…
‘But Granny is sooo boring’ said Ben.
WHAT I THOUGHT
This is my first time reading David Walliams. I’m a fan of Little Britain and think he’s hilarious on screen. I’d no idea he wrote children’s book until recently so this was the perfect choice for my ‘a book written by a celebrity’ category.
Gangsta Granny made me laugh all the way through. This is a funny, dazzling book. I absolutely loved it. I really liked the illustrations used throughout. They added depth to the story. This is a cracking read for kids. I’d have been in the seven heaven of delight if this book had been published when I was a kid. Walliams packs a punch and ticks all the boxes. The characters were great. I loved Ben. I loved his granny, she’s the perfect caricature of everyone’s granny; farts a lot without realising it, smells of cabbage, like Murray mints and plays scrabble. Ben’s parents and their obsession with ballroom dancing made for some funny moments. I loved Ben’s hair-brained plan to steal the Crown Jewels. The night of the robbery is packed with funny and thrilling moments. Absolutely loved this book. Highly recommended for kids of all ages. I definitely plan to read more of Walliams books.
