BLURB FROM THE COVER
Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly old skinflint. He hates everyone, especially children. But at Christmas three ghosts come to visit him, scare him into mending his ways, and he finds, as he celebrates with Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and their family, that geniality brings its own reward…
REVIEW
HIGHLIGHTS: I thought Dickens’s writing was great. His prose was very rich but simple and exquisitely detailed. It was a joy to read. I get why A Christmas Carol is one of the best known and most loved Christmas tales. I think Dickens did a great job with his characterisation. Scrooge, his nephew and Bob Cratchit came to life on the page. I thought each visitation was well written and I loved how Dickens gradually showed Scrooge’s change of heart. The Ghost of Christmas Present was my favourite. I got all teary-eyed when the ghost started to age during the journey with Scrooge. The happy ending was predictable to an extent but Dickens manages to pull it off. My heart lifted right along with scrooge. Ebenezer Scrooge was a great name for the character.
LOWLIGHTS: I know the story of A Christmas Carol so well. I’ve seen umpteen TV and film adaptations including A Muppet Christmas Carol. Scrooged and the recent Disney version, A Christmas Carol. Unfortunately, the adaptations are so faithful to Dickens’s work I didn’t gain anything new from reading A Christmas Carol. I didn’t get anything from the written version I haven’t already gotten from the screen adaptations. This put a bit of a damper on my enjoyment. I also had a weird mind movie going on as I read that was a weird combination of A Muppet Christmas Carol and the recent Disney version.

FINAL THOUGHTS
This was a free e-book from www.kobo.com.
I thought A Christmas Carol was great. However, I don’t know if my enjoyment was based solely on Dickens’s writing or the fact I knew the story so well and had seen and loved so many adaptations. I definitely want to read some Dickens that I don’t have so much prior knowledge of so I start off on more neutral ground.
